Governor Butch Otter today appointed former Bonners Ferry High School math teacher Tom Whitney to the Caldwell-based Third Judicial District judgeship left vacant by the recent retirement of Judge Thomas Ryan.

Whitney, a Washington, D.C. native, has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland who taught math here before being accepted to law school at the University of Idaho’s College of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree.

He and his wife Diane own and operate the Moscow law firm Whitney & Whitney, LLP.

“I am deeply honored that Governor Otter has placed his confidence in me to serve the citizens of the Third Judicial District and the State of Idaho,” Whitney said. “It is a privilege to join Idaho’s outstanding judges on the bench, and I look forward to working with them in the public interest.”

“Tom’s passion for justice, high regard for the legal system and extensive experience in Idaho courts make him an outstanding choice for district judge,” Otter said. “He also has the strong work ethic and management skills that will be a great asset in handling a heavy caseload in southwestern Idaho.”
