Approximately
30 soldiers from two aviation units of the Idaho
Army National Guard are deploying this morning
at 9:00 a.m., headed first for training, then on
to locations within the Central Command Theater
in support of combat operations.
The United States Central Command area of
responsibility includes countries in the Middle
East, parts of northern Africa, and Central
Asia. Afghanistan and Iraq fall within the area
of the Command.
Most of these Idaho soldiers belong to the Army
National Guard's 1st of the 168th General
Support Aviation Battalion, located at Gowen
Field in Boise, and will deploy to Afghanistan
to participate in Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
This unit operates the UH-60 Black Hawk
helicopter, and will provide MEDEVAC operations
within Afghanistan. Their tour of duty of
approximately 12 months will begin with training
at Fort Hood, Texas, with the remaining months
in Afghanistan.
Other Idaho personnel, approximately half dozen
in number, are currently operating in various
locations within the U.S. Central Command
Theater.
“Our Idaho Army National Guard aircrews are some
of the finest in the nation,” said Lt. Col.
Christopher Burt, the Idaho Army National
Guard’s state aviation officer. “These soldiers
are well-trained, extremely focused and ready to
perform the mission.”
These deployments will mark the eighth time in a
decade that Idaho Army National Guard aviation
units have deployed in support of overseas
combat operations. |
