Badgers split with Stags in baseball doubleheader

The Bonners Ferry Badgers baseball team traveled to North Spokane to take on the Deer Park Stags on Saturday, March 21, and split a doubleheader, losing the first game 10-7 and taking the second game 6-3.

GAME 1
A seven run 4th inning by the Stags was costly for the Badgers as they had 5 errors. allowing Deer Park to send 12 batters to the plate in a 10-7 loss. The Badgers pounded out 12 hits in the loss and left 8 runners stranded.

Bonners Ferry had a 5-2 lead until the bottom of the fourth with Steve Anzalone hitting a RBI single in the first inning. In the 2nd inning, Kevin Gray reached base on a single and Jesse Dunham hit a RBI double to right center to score Gray. The Badgers added 2 more runs in the bottom of the 3rd when Vince Bennett hit a single and later scored on Caleb Gering’s RBI single to right.
With the score 10-5, Bonners Ferry added two more runs in the bottom of the 5th on 3 hits to narrow the score to 10-7. In the top of the 7th, the Badgers had bases loaded with two outs and down three runs and the leadoff hitter up to bat. Jesse Dunham hit a towering shot to left only to have the wind hold it up and the left fielder caught it to end the game.

Dunham, Bennett, Caleb Blackmore and Caleb Gering all had two hits in the game. with Gering and Dunham each hitting a double.

GAME 2
Sophomore pitcher Jesse Dunham improved his record to 3-0 scattering four hits in four innings of work to give the Badgers a 6-3 win. Freshman Brady Bateman came in relief to pitch three strong innings.

Dunham started the scoring in the first after a single and later scored on Vince Bennett’s RBI single to right. The Badgers added a run in the 2nd inning after Chris Sabin singled with one out and later scored on a RBI single from Shay Garcia. With the score 2-1 in the top of the third inning, Bonners Ferry added four more runs on three hits. After Nick Sabin was hit by a pitch, Steve Anzalone, Caleb Gering and Chris Sabin all hit back to back singles. The Stags added two runs in the bottom of the 6th to make the final score 6-3.

On the day, Bonners Ferry recorded 24 hits with Jesse Dunham leading the way going 5 for 7 on the day. Caleb Gering and Vince Bennett each had three hits on the day. The split gives the Badgers an overall record of 4-3 going into the annual Bonners Ferry tournament this coming weekend of March 27-28.
