Badgers sweep Spartans in IML season-opening

Vince Bennett pitched a complete game striking
out 10 and Brady Bateman and Steve Anzalone
collected four hits each on the day as the
Badgers won 9-6 and 17-1 in the Intermountain
League doubleheader opener for both teams.
GAME 1 – Bonners Ferry 9,
Priest River 6
The Badgers scored five runs in the first inning
and held on for the 9-6 win over the Spartans.
Priest River scored one run in the first and
four in the 2nd inning to knot the game up 5-5.
In the top of the 3rd inning, Caleb Blackmore
scored from Brady Bateman’s RBI single to go
ahead 6-5. Priest River responded with a run in
the bottom of the 3rd to again tie the game 6-6.
Bonners Ferry added two more runs in the top of
the 4th inning after Shay Garcia reached base on
an error from the right fielder, and Steve
Anzalone hit a double. Vince Bennett then scored
both on a two-run single to right. The Badgers
added a run in the top of the 7th to secure the
9-6 win.
Bateman, Anzalone and Chris Sabin all had two
hits in the game.
GAME 2 – Bonners Ferry 17,
Priest River 1
The Badgers scored early and often, thumping the
Spartans 17-1 in game two of the doubleheader.
In the top of the 1st inning, Brady Bateman
walked to start the game, and later scored on
Steve Anzalone’s RBI single.
In the top of the 2nd inning, the Badgers scored
3 runs on 4 hits with Kevin Gray hitting a RBI
single and Shay Garcia scoring Gray and Bateman
on a two-run single.
The Badgers added 3 more in the 3rd when Nick
Sabin was hit by a pitch for the 3rd time in the
day and Chris Sabin walked. After Caleb
Blackmore reached on an error, Caleb Gering hit
a 2 run single to left center to score both of
the Sabins.
Bonners Ferry exploded with 7 runs in the 4th
inning off only two hits while the Spartans
committed four errors, walked two, and hit a
batter. The Badgers added three more in the 5th
nning, highlighted by Triston Howell’s RBI
triple to right.
Anzalone went three for four with three RBI, and
Bateman and Garcia both went two for two in the
game. Blackmore picked up the win for the
Badgers.
Bonners Ferry (8-4 overall, 2-0 IML) travel to
Kellogg to face the Wildcats on Tuesday, while
the JV team hosts the Kellogg JV Wildcats at
home starting at 4:00 p.m.
