Badger Track posts great marks at
Timberlake 16 team invitational |

by Tyler Warner
BFHS Assistant Track Coach
The
BFHS Track and Field season began to wind down
Thursday, April 23, near Spirit Lake. Timberlake
High School hosted an invitational that featured
all four Intermountain League teams, also Deer
Park and Freeman, as well as Lakeland, Kootenai,
Deary, Troy, St. Maries, Grangeville, and
others. With 16 teams competing, the meet
brought together talented athletes to push each
other late in the season. However it limited the
maximum number of entries in each event to four.
“We had to get creative to make sure everybody
had something to do,” said distance coach Tyler
Warner.
In the thrower's circle, Olivia Whittaker posted
season best throws of 27-11 in the shot put and
81-5 in the discus. Zack Egge also had a season
best throw of 37-06.5 in the shot put and Evan
Ellis threw the discus 112-11 for his best this
season.
Mackenzie Mendenhall had another solid day for
the Badgers. Her time at practice paid off in
the long jump. Jumps coach Keith Carey noted
that a slight adjustment made for a personal
best jump of 16-00.5. “She’d been jumping off
her left foot all season. Then I found out she’s
left handed, so we tried jumping off the right
foot. Her mid-air form improved a lot.”
Mackenzie agreed with the improvement, “I
assumed my footwork would be similar to hurdles.
It felt a lot better to switch feet.” She still
managed a solid day in the hurdles, placing
second in the 100m hurdles and winning the 300m
hurdles.
Sprinters also saw times improve as experience
and training catch up with young athletes. Louis
Balcaen had season bests in the 100m and 200m
hurdles. Natasha Webster also dropped 0.5
seconds off her 200m time to run a 29.48. “It’s
not a lot, but it’s a sign of improvement,” said
Natasha.
Relay teams experienced success as well. In the
girls sprint medley (1-1-2-4), Webster, Kendra
Urbaniak, Mendenhall, and Jordan Young combined
to run a season best 2:02.22 and secure second
place. In the boys 4x400, Chase Dinning, Warren
Carle, Isaac Lavala, and Jacob Perkins ran a
season best 3:51.
For the distance crew, Hannah Lysne had perhaps
the best day. Starting off the day with the
3200m, Hannah
ran a career best 14:07, and under the lights
ran another personal best 6:27 in the mile.
Jacob Perkins also ran a thrilling 800, winning
by a fraction of a second with a 2:04 as a
Lakeland half-miler closed in the final 100m.
Fellow senior Chase Dinning also overcame a
long-time obstacle in the 800, breaking his
sophomore year PR by running a 2:11. Freshman
Jordan young needed a good day to qualify for
Thursday’s Meet of Champions. Coming in with a
previous best of 2:38, Jordan dropped her time
down to 2:34, currently placing her in the top
15 for all of North Idaho schools.
This
coming Thursday other Badger elites will
assemble with the best of North Idaho in the
District I Meet of Champions at Post Falls. In
order to compete, athletes must rank in the top
16 in any event. While the spots are still open,
the Badgers expect Jordan Young, Mackenzie
Mendenhall, Warren Carle, Kendra Urbaniak, Jacob
Perkins, Tucker Cavender, Isaac Lavala, and
Breanna Copeland to receive invitations. The
boys 4x400 team may also receive a chance to
compete and others such as Hannah Lysne and
Chase Dinning may be allowed in. Competition
will begin at 2:30, with running events starting
at about 3:30.
Districts will be held at Timberlake High School
next Thursday and Friday.
