BFHS Class of '83 getting early reunion start

June 14, 2012
Weren't they cute? It's hard to believe, but it's been almost 30 years since the Bonners Ferry High School Class of '83 received their diplomas and set out into the great big world!
It's 13 months and counting until the Bonners Ferry High School Class of '83 celebrates its 30th reunion, and work is already underway to make it a reunion to remember.

It's going to be made even more special, as 2013 will also bring the All Class Reunion, which brings Badger alumni from all over the world back to town to renew old acquaintances and catch up with friends not seen in a while.

To get everyone on the same page, the Class of '83 reunion committee has launched a page on Facebook, http://www.facebook.com/pages/BFHS-Class-of-1983-Thirty-Year-Reunion/249566331730597, and they are asking everyone in the class to reach out to other classmates who've kept in touch, using the Facebook page as a gathering place. In fact, what they'd really like to see are pictures posted of everyone both from today as well as during those golden school years ... it might help take away a little bit of that shock that's normal when you first meet up with someone you haven't seen in years!

While things are far from being nailed down, considerable progress is being made on the party planning front. Darla is looking at bands, and she may have found it, a rocking quartet out of Coeur d'Alene, the Hitmen, who know how to crank out the 80s hits.

The venue is still under discussion; so far it seems a toss up between the beautiful Twin Rivers Canyon Resort at the confluence of the Kootenai River and the Moyie, where there is ample space for camping plus fun outdoor activities, to the newest gathering place in Bonners Ferry, the Kootenai River Brewing Company, where owner and brewmaster Mike Naumann could very well brew up a special beer dedicated to the Class of '83!

The dates haven't been firmed up, either, but organizers are looking hard at July 6-7, a holiday weekend which might make it easier for far-flung alumni and their families attend, along with everyone whose still around with memories of the class who'll no doubt be crashing the party to say hi and catch up.

Dinner is going to be a big hit, as Gina has volunteered to do the catering, and she is an extraordinary chef! It's going to be a big job and she won't be turning down help; you can use the Facebook page to sign up.

It may be early, but the BFHS Class of '83 reunion is promising to show that the class still has it!

Just to begin stirring a few memories, here's a look back at some of the highlights of that year. The Red Hot Chili Peppers recorded their first album, Mount  Kīlauea begins slowly erupting on the Big Island of Hawaii and it's still flowing today. Computers were far different, IBM developed a PC and 1983 was the year that one of the first Internet protocols, ARPANET, transitioned to the protocol still dominant, TCP/IP.

The space shuttle Challenger made her maiden voyage, Pioneer 10 became the first man-made object to leave the solar system, Sally Ride became the first woman put into space by the United States. It was in 1983 that President Ronald Reagan unveiled his "Star Wars" missile defense plan as well as the announcement that Global Positioning System technology, GPS, would be made available for civilian use.

KISS appeared in public for the first time without makeup, Martin Luther King Jr. Day became a national holiday, Reverend Jesse Jackson announces his bid for the presidency and a still recognizable Michael Jackson released "Billie Jean."

Hard to believe we're all 30 years older!
