February 18, 2012
Horatio "Gene" Stalcup passed away Saturday, February 11, 2012, at Kootenai Medical Center, Coeur d'Alene. The family is planning a Memorial Service at Brad Stalcup's Moyie Springs residence in the spring.

Born June 14, 1927, in Minneapolis and grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Gene started out working for the Great Northern Railroad as a cook in the "Empire Builder" dinning car. The late 1940s to 1958 he was a licensed American Motorcycle Association professional racer, competing in the nationwide scheduled events in the summer months and working as a machinist during the long Minnesota winters.

In 1958, a near fatal crash ended his racing career, but not his love of motorcycling. In 1961, he opened a B M Wand Yamaha motorcycle dealership and repair shop in Riverside, California, and also continued advancing his machinist skills and training on the side. In 1970 he headed for the northwest and settled in Bonners Ferry the summer of 1971, where he started and operated G & M Manufacturing, a general machine shop, in the Three Mile area until his death.

Gene's rides to motorcycle rallies all across the country and Canada from Bonners Ferry were among his fondest memories. He also enjoyed square dancing, hunting, fishing, camping, and golf.

He is survived by his sister Inez Pond, Bloomington, Minnesota; nieces Yvette Mealman, Connie Mealman, Nancy McCoy and nephew James Pond. Daughter Vicky Stalcup, granddaughter Dena Neice and four great grandchildren, all in the Riverside, California area, son Bradley Stalcup and wife Kathy, Moyie Springs; grandchildren Tiana Dirks and husband Amos, and three great grandchildren; Tessa, Wyatt, and Holly of Potlatch. He is also survived by grandson Adam Michel and Lauren of Moyie Springs, and his companion for the last ten years, Beverly Torrence, Bonners Ferry.

Family and friends are invited to sign Gene’s book at www.bonnersferryfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Bonners Ferry Funeral Home.
