Earthquake in Idaho Panhandle
felt by many in Boundary County
April 23, 2015
The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting what many people in Boundary County and elsewhere in the Idaho Panhandle felt earlier this evening: an earthquake.  In fact, two earthquakes.  (Update as of 3:00 a.m. on Friday, April 24---now earthquake #3 at 1:29 a.m., early hours of Friday, April 24).

The USGS is reporting two earthquakes occuring this evening. The first occurred at 7:32 p.m., a magnitude 4.1 earthquake occurred, with its epicenter at a location 14 miles southeast of Sandpoint and a depth of 3.1 miles. About three hours later, at 10:43 p.m. a second earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred with its epicenter a little farther north, about 9 miles east-southeast of Ponderay, depth again at 3.1 miles.

(Update as of 3:00 a.m. on Friday, April 24---Earthquake #3 reported by USGS to have its epicenter 8 miles east-southeast of Sandpoint, magnitude 3.3, depth 12.8 miles).

The USGS website has a page called "Did You Feel It?" where people can fill out a quick form indicating whether they felt the earthquake or not. At the time of this posting (about 11:45 p.m.), over 350 people have filed responses about having felt the first tremor at 7:32 p.m. There were 544 people who filled out the form indicating how strongly they felt the second Idaho Panhandle earthquake at 10:43 p.m. On the USGS survey scale of rating the shaking felt from 1-10, the responses all cluster around scores of 2, 3, or 4, in the "weak" shaking to "light" shaking range.

Many in Boundary County are reporting on social media sites their having felt the shaking of these quakes.

You can go to the USGS "Did You Feel It?" page and fill out the USGS survey at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us200028q3#impact_dyfi

The following map (Source:  website of the U.S. Geological Survey) shows where shaking from the later, 10:43 p.m. earthquake was felt, and clearly shows shakes felt throughout Boundary County.
