Boundary County sending five spelling champions to Regional Spelling Bee, winner goes to Washington, D.C.
March 2, 2016
Five Boundary County champion spellers will be competing with 43 other North Idaho students, with an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. on the line for the winner.

Valley View students Damon Madson (fourth grade) and Morgan Moon (fifth grade) and Boundary County Middle School students Tyler Stockdale (sixth grade), Regina Chaphan (seventh grade), and Adrianne Brown (eighth grade) were winners in our local spelling bees earlier in the year, and will spell competitively next at the North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee in Coeur d'Alene.

A total of 48 fourth- through eighth-graders from the five northern counties of Idaho will participate in the 12th annual North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 19, at North Idaho College, the winner of which will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee the end of May.

Each contestant was the winner of his or her respective grade level in district qualifying bees held in public school districts as well as a home school and private school district throughout North Idaho.

“A total of 48 schools are involved in this year’s spelling bee from 11 districts across North Idaho, including home school associations and private schools,” said North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee Coordinator Mindy Patterson. “Congratulations to those who qualified for the regional bee this year—it’s an amazing accomplishment.”

At the Regional level, the competition gets a little tougher. For one thing all speller compete against each other, regardless of grade level, so fourth grade students are thrown right into the mix trying to outspell eighth graders.

The competition will begin Saturday, March 19 at 9:00 a.m. in Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center on NIC’s main campus. Registration for participants will begin at 8:30 a.m.

The event is sponsored by Hagadone Newspapers and hosted by NIC.
