March 23, 2016
by Michael Meier
Boundary County Public Information Officer

Penguin Plunge 2016 was a blast and huge success. Jumpers ready for “Freezin' for a Reason” took the plunge in the Kootenai River last Saturday, March 19--the last official day of winter.

Our Plunge Judges included Joel Minor, Tribal Police Chief, Boundary County School District 101 Superintendent Gary Pflueger, Shaleyna Higgins, who serves as Distinguished Young Woman 2015, Bonners Ferry Mayor David Sims, Jeffery Lisius who is Commander of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and Bill Connelly of North Idaho Spas.

Jumper winners this year were:
First place costume: Marcievee
Second place costume: Steve Usher
Third place costume: the Girls dressed as pumpkins
Judges Choice: Tom Chaney
Spirit Award: the Echo Springs Boys (three).

Most money raised was Tony Rohrwasser South Boundary Fire.

Pledges and donations totaling over $2,000 will be donated to the Special Olympics for the purpose of supporting those with intellectual disabilities.

Thank you to everyone that provided donations, food, time and energy to create another special time at the Bonners Ferry Penguin Plunge 2016.

See you next year at “Freezin' for a Reason, 2017.”
