April busy for Lady Badgers softball

April 24, 2014
by Coach Lauren Bartoe

April continues to be a busy month for the high school softball team, with many girls putting in time for both the JV and Varsity squads. With six games over the course of six days between the two, the Badgers had a disappointing record to show for a hard fought week of softball. With many close loses, the team went 1-5 overall between April 14 through 19.

Monday the JV opened up against Kellogg JV in Kellogg. Freshman Serenity Winey took the mound with Sam Schneider catching. The JV five-run per inning rule was in effect, holding the Badgers to only five runs in the first inning and again in the 4th. Kellogg only reached the five-run limit once, in the fifth inning. Sadly, Kellogg edged out the Lady Badgers, leaving them one run shy in the end with a 21-22 loss.

Tuesday the Varsity team welcomed Kellogg to their home field where Senior MaKenzie Carle led the attack on the hill with seven strikeouts. She was backed up by Gabby Blackmore and Nicole Donn both going two for four with first inning back-to-back doubles.

A stellar fifth inning which yielded seven runs for Bonners Ferry brought the game within two runs, with the Badgers down 9-11. Kellogg knocked in two runs in the sixth to take a 13-9 lead, and Bonners was only able to answer with one in the sixth and a completely scoreless seventh inning ended in a 10-13 loss.

Thursday the JV team hosted the Timberlake Tigers JV, claiming the only win of the week. Freshman Nicole Donn earned the "W" with one strikeout. The Badgers outscored the Tigers 13-8.

Friday the JV game was cancelled due to rain.

Saturday brought Timberlake's Varsity team to Bonners Ferry. In a hard-fought game all around, Carle and Donn shared the circle, accumulating five "K's" between them. Exceptional batting from the home team kept the game close and in the bottom of the 4th the Badgers were only trailing 10-16.

Senior Brianna Reasoner went two for two, scoring five runs. Sophomore Gabby Blackmore went two for four with a double, along with Sophomore Chantelle Coon who went two for three with a double. Senior MaKenzie Carle added in a triple but at the end of the day, Timberlake scored ten runs in the final two innings, resulting in a disappointing 16-27 loss for the Badgers.

Game two on Saturday saw the same team of pitchers, with both Carle and Donn hurling the ball to combine for four strikeouts. The game was tied 9-9 headed into the sixth inning, but Timberlake's bats proved too much for the defense, with many Badger errors allowing 13 runs in the final two innings and only answering with three of their own. Mariah Rae went two for five, so did MaKenzie Carle, who contributed a double and an in-the-park home run into deep right field. Nicole Donn also belted out a double and freshman Andrea Maas stepped up batting two for three with two singles and scoring a run. The final score was 12-23.

Despite a disappointing week, the girls never gave up and scored runs in every game. Monday and Tuesdays games April 21st and 22nd were cancelled.  Senior Day will be held on Thursday, April 24, as the Badgers host the Troy Trojans.

Friday is a JV home game and Saturday, April 26 the Ladies travel to Kellogg for a doubleheader. Districts will be held May 1 and May 6.
