Great regular season finale for
BFHS Cross Country
October 13, 2014
by Tyler Warner
BFHS Cross Country Head Coach

The regular season ended for the Badgers at the Riley Creek Campground in Laclede, Idaho. Sandpoint’s William Johnson Invitational, held last Saturday, October 11, attracted all four Inter-Mountain League teams that will be competing at the District 1 3A championship, in addition to larger 4A and 5A schools. Bonners Ferry runners finally had a chance to see how they compared to their rivals and earn personal best times on a very fast 5k course.

The JV boys started off the day for the Badgers. Nick Magdaleno ran his best time this year with a 22:20. Andrew McCoy also snagged a personal best 23:17. Badger coaches have been extremely impressed with the progression of their freshmen. McCoy in particular started out the season running 32:41 at Post Falls and has now dropped over 10 minutes, a collosal feat in distance running. Magdaleno has dropped 5:01 since his first race. Will Colson also ran in 22:55 and Sophomore Alex Urbaniak stayed tough to finish in 24:45.

The Lady Badgers were next. Nicole Donn led the way once again, finishing 25th overall with a season best 21:56. Victoria Smith also posted a best 24:30 and Hannah Lysne ran her season best 25:21. Lysne is finding her strides late in the season, just when the team needs girls to step up before districts. With the return of Makaliah Dowell, the Lady Badger runners could come up with the performance they need to get to State.

Finishing off the day were the varsity boys. Featuring two freshmen, the varsity squad performed well against district competition, coming in second against those teams. The boys’ varsity race had the fastest start by far. First mile times were nearly 5 minutes for the front pack. Jacob Perkins admitted starting too fast, but still managed a strong 17:31. Fellow senior Tucker Cavender also posted a career best 18:40. Nolan Stidham is also starting to rise late in the season, coming in at 19:12. Eric Ellis outduelled a Kellogg runner to post a 19:23. Freshman Neil Martin was 2 seconds from breaking the 20 minute barrier, crossing at 20:01 and came in as the 5th Badger. Dawson Thomas, the other freshman on varsity, also had a season best time of 20:55.

As the season’s end nears, the Badgers will seek to continue their season with strong races at districts. The races will be held at Timberlake High School in 10 days, races will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. on October 23.
