Badgers and Panthers tangled last night in basketball double header
December 3, 2014
Badger Varsity Girls
In a game at Bonners Ferry High School last night, the Bonners Ferry Varsity Girls' Basketball team cruised to a 61-30 victory over the 2A Coeur d'Alene Charter Panthers.

The Badgers were never seriously threatened in the game, although the Panther girls had several well-executed plays resulting in points, and hit several three point shots.

Senior Jasmine Hill led the Badger scoring with 18 points and also had 5 assists. Savannah Woods had 15 points, and 6 points to go with them. Point guard Abby Skeen had 9 points and 5 assists.

"We had a strong team effort, and all nine girls contributed to the victory," said Varsity Girls' Coach Chris Chatburn.

Badger Junior Varsity Boys
For the second game of the evening, the original plan was for the Badger Varsity Boys to play the Coeur d'Alene Charter Varsity. However, as the smaller Coeur d'Alene school does not have a varsity team this year, their Junior Varsity team played the Bonners Ferry Junior Varsity.

The opening game of the season for the JV team featured a lot of turnovers by the Badgers throughout the game, and some good shooting by the Panther Junior Varsity (which included a senior and two juniors who made substantial scoring contributions), resulting in a lead of approximately 10-15 points throughout much of the game.

Things were looking a little dismal for the Badgers going into the fourth quarter of the game, trailing the Panthers 38-27. A quick score by sophomore Elijah Price spurred some optimism for the Badgers, cutting the Panther lead to 9 points. But things got even more dismal immediately, as the Panthers hit back to back three pointers, and the Badgers twice gave up turnovers by simply stepping over the baseline on uncontested inbounds passes.

The Panthers led by 13 with the score 46-33 with about 6 minutes remaining in the game. Their coach was telling them to slow down and control the game, and work the clock down.

That is where the game made a complete turnaround. Suddenly a different Badger team showed up. The Panthers would not score again the rest of the game, as the Badgers suddenly started making steals, hitting baskets, running up 10 straight points, and bringing the home crowd to the edge of their seats.

The last two minutes of the game were intense as the Badgers closed the gap, but ultimately they could not make up those last three points, losing the game by a final score of 46-43.
