BFHS Baseball: Badgers upend Dawgs in extra inning thriller
April 5, 2015
The Bonners Ferry Badgers staged a dramatic come from behind 5-4 win in extra innings against the 4A Sandpoint Bulldogs last Saturday.

The Badgers started the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd inning after Nick Sabin reached base on a fielder’s choice and later scored on an error from the second baseman.

In the top of the 3rd, Sandpoint responded with a run to tie the score 1 – 1, but in the bottom of the 3rd, the Badgers added two more runs on three hits in the inning. Brady Bateman reached on his second hit of the game and Shay Garcia reached base on a walk. Starting pitcher Vince Bennett hit a run scoring double and Nick Sabin added a RBI single in the inning.

In the top of the 5th inning, Sandpoint scored three runs on four hits to take the lead 4 – 3. After Bennett pitched six strong innings striking out seven, Steve Anzalone pitched in relief striking out two of three batters in the 7th inning.

With the Badgers down one run in the last at bats of regulation, Garcia hit a single to right center to start the inning and Anzalone followed up with a single. With Garcia on third and one out, Nick Sabin executed a perfect suicide squeeze to tie the game 4 – 4. In the top of the 8th, Anzalone struck out all three Bulldog batters.

With two outs in the bottom of the 8th inning, Garcia hit his 2nd single in the game, and Anzalone followed with a towering shot to right center that hit the fence scoring Garcia from first base to secure the 5 – 4 thriller.

Bennett got three hits, including two doubles while Bateman, Garcia and Anzalone each got two hits in the game. The win puts the Badgers record at 6 – 4 going into league play next Saturday at Priest River.
