Badger Track duels with Timberlake, Kellogg,
and in Freeman meet
April 24, 2015
Three meets in seven days made for a tough week for the BFHS track team. Two of those meets came last week as the Badgers returned to Kellogg for a double-duel with Timberlake and Kellogg and traveled to Freeman High School for the Interstate Rivals Invitational. “This is a tough part of our schedule,” said head coach George Hays. “The kids have to work hard to stay caught up in classes and still have to perform well at these meets.”

In spite of the challenge, both boys and girl’s teams had plenty of personal bests and overall good performances. Tuesday’s Kellogg duel featured the weather that has become a staple of this track season—rain and wind. Even though the sun broke through in patches, the wind still blew against the finishing stretches and made for tough competition. Friday, however, featured the best weather of the season. Sunny skies and a light, refreshing breeze made for great conditions and some top competition brought out the best in the Badgers.

Among the strong performances was freshman Jordan Young. In the 800 Jordan ran a 2:39 on Tuesday, another personal best and good for third place. Her highlight reel finish, however, came in the Freeman 800. With 200m to go, Jordan was able to pass 5 different runners coming out of the turn. She nearly caught first place. “I think she heard everybody yelling,” Jordan said of her opponent, “She turned around and had to start running hard again.” Even though she couldn’t catch first, Jordan still claimed an impressive 2nd place medal with a 2:40 against strong, experienced runners.

Bonners Ferry pole vaulters came alive last week as well. At Kellogg, Victoria Smith took first by clearing 8-06. Senior Kendra Urbaniak took second, also vaulting 8-06. Kendra, however, would finally get a long awaited Personal Record on Friday. Since first clearing 8-06 as a sophomore, Kendra had yet to best that in a competition. Kendra won first place at Freeman with an impressive 9-00 vault. “It felt really good,” said Kendra, still beaming from her accomplishment. “I’ve been trying to get over that height at a meet for a long time!” The boys pole vaulters also experienced some success. Sophomore Isaac Lavala took second at Kellogg with a 10-00 vault. Fellow sophomore Alex Urbaniak took third at Kellogg with a 9-06.

Isaac also ran well in the 400m on Tuesday, posting a 58.87 for 3rd place. For the ladies 100m sprint, Natasha Webster took 7th on Friday with a 13.98 and also broke the elusive 30 second barrier in the 200m with a 29.9 for 5th place. “It was good to get some competition,” said Natasha of Friday’s meet. “I feel like it will help me in districts, knowing that I can run that fast when I get pushed.”

Senior Mackenzie Mendenhall performed well all week, winning the 100m and 300m hurdles Tuesday and taking second in both events at Freeman. “She got some good competition,” Coach Hays said of Mackenzie’s second place finishes. “Our league is a small pond so when we go to big meets like Freeman our top performers get challenged a bit more than normal.”

Distance runners from Bonners Ferry set hard paces for competition to follow. While freshmen like Nick Magdaleno and Malachi Rivkin, the fastest Badger in the mile on Friday with a 5:29, continue to set new PRs, the old veterans showed that experience and hard work produce results late in careers. Senior Tucker Cavender ran away with 1st place in the boys 3200m at Kellogg with an 11:18. Junior Alva Swanson took 4th with an 11:29 and was the top Badger in the 3200 at Freeman. Jacob Perkins won both 800m races with a 2:11 on Tuesday and a 2:05 Friday. Getting tough competition at Freeman, Jacob was heard remarking, “That was fun! That’s definitely a first for the 800!” At the Freeman Invite the boys distance team competed in the distance medley relay and took second, “Nolan gave us a great start and the other guys worked their tails off to keep us there. It really shows our depth as a distance team to do so well at a large meet like this,” said Warner.

The Badgers next meet will be the Timberlake Invitational at Timberlake High School on Friday, April 24. Competition begins at 2:30pm. The last meet before Districts will be the District I Meet of Champions next Thursday, April 30, featuring the top 16 athletes in each event in Idaho District I.
