Badger Baseball clinches first place in Intermountain League with win over Timberlake

The Bonners Ferry Badger baseball team clinched the Intermountain League Championship on Tuesday with a 5-1 win over the Timberlake Tigers. This is the second overall league championship for the baseball team and first since 2007.

Junior Vince Bennett pitched a complete game giving up six hits, while striking out three and walking four batters.

The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the 4th when Steve Anzalone reached base on an error. After a sacrifice bunt from Caleb Blackmore, Caleb Gering was hit by a pitch to advance Anzalone to second.

Shay Garcia then hit a line drive single to center that got by the center fielder. Both Anzalone and Gering scored on the play. Garcia later scored on Vince Bennett’s ground out to second, putting the Badgers up 3-0.

In the top of the 5th inning, the Tigers responded with a run when Josh Lampert walked to start the inning and later scored on a RBI double from Jerrett Plunkett. The Badgers added two more runs in their half of the 5th inning when Jesse Dunham reached base on an error from the shortstop with two outs. Anzalone then hit a single up the middle and Dunham scored on a misplay from the pitcher. Blackmore then walked. While attempting to pick off Blackmore, the pitcher threw the ball out of bounds to score Anzalone making the score 5-1.

The win puts the Badgers overall record at 14-6 and 8-1 in league play. They will finish their regular season on Thursday, April 30 against the 5A Post Falls varsity.

The District Tournament will be held in Bonners Ferry May 4 and 5 with the Badgers playing the #4 seed Monday afternoon at 4p.m. The winner of the District Tournament advances to the State Tournament in Ontario, Oregon May 14 – 16. The runner-up will play in a winner to state game on May 9th in Grangeville, Idaho.
